criatura, 2022

Criatura is a photographic invocation of the wild woman, the healer, and the witch —the ways they have been revered, feared, and suppressed—and the lasting impact of these histories on contemporary understandings of female power and autonomy.

The wild woman is instinctive, untamed, and deeply entwined with nature’s rhythms. She embodies strength, resilience, and an intuitive understanding of the cycles of life and death. She follows her own path, unbound by convention, thriving in the untamed wilderness of intuition and freedom.

The witch, by contrast, is a figure of knowledge and power, feared for her mastery of healing and transformation. She is the keeper of secret wisdom, passing down remedies and rituals, yet condemned for her defiance of patriarchal control. Persecuted and misunderstood, she represents both resistance and survival.

The work also weaves in the visual language of the sigil—a symbol of intention and power. Originating in astrology and evolving through ceremonial magic of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, sigils serve as a potent form of visual mysticism. In this work, sigils act as a bridge between past and present, reclaiming the narrative of the witch and the healer, transforming historical persecution into an emblem of strength and resilience.

Criatura is both tribute and invocation, honoring those who walked before and calling forth the wild spirit that still stirs within.
